Giorgio Armani has been one of the most influential fashion
designers of the last fifty years. He was born in 1934 in
Piacenza, Italy and has often been called the “Father of
Italian Fashion”. This title did not come easily to the young
Giorgio. Initially he had no intention of going into the
fashion industry. He attended medical school for two years,
took photography classes, served in the military and finally
ended up as a window dresser in a prestigious fashion house.
Here he found his calling. After working for over a decade in
the fashion emporium of Nino Cerruti he decided in 1970 to step
out on his own as a freelance designer.
In 1975 with his partner, Segio Galcotti he established his
own fashion house, Armani. His fashions quickly caught the eyes
of the A- list of people and his tailored, precisely cut
garments were all the rage. Initially he focused on men’s
fashions, but within a year he had also launched a
sophisticated and tailored women’s line. Both sexes seemed to
love his designs that emphasized clean silhouettes for both men
and women. In 1980, he designed and tailored Richard Gere’s
suit for the popular movie, “American Gigolo”. And ever the
astute businessman, he began cultivating famous people to wear
his fashions.
Since his fame was quickly spreading, it was not hard to
find well-known people excited to wear his fashions. One such
patron was Pat Riley, the coach at that time of the Los Angeles
Lakers. Soon the rich and famous throughout the world were
seeking him out and his fashions were in great demand. In 1985
his partner Segio Galcotti passed away and at that time
Giorgio’s sister joined the firm to help him run the
ever-increasing Armani empire.
In both 2001 and 2006, Forbes Magazine named Giorgio Armani
as the most successful Italian designer. His fashions have
remained in vogue for decades. His Giorgio Armani Colognes and
Cosmetics are world famous and used by people of distinction
all over the world. And his creativity and impeccable taste
have also influenced him to open several cafes and restaurants
in various places in the world. He even owns a confectionary
company and a bar in Hong Kong. Giorgio’s zest for life and
singular talent for style and taste have made him truly “the
father of Italian fashion.”
